It’s been exactly one month since Skyler Sue passed away. She would be four months and 4 days old by now, we can’t help but wonder how she would be like if she was alive today. We cope with the grief of losing her by keeping ourselves busy everyday. When we’re not at work, we occupy ourselves by doing some house chores, driving around town, playing with Skyler’s canine sisters, or adding more to her little memorial garden.

In her garden, we planted two of the flowering plants that we received during her service (pink rose bush and the hydrangea). Some of Skyler’s hair were added in the roots of both plants. Mom commissioned an artist to work on Skyler’s garden slate marker. The vintage slate is a historic piece that was once used as roofing shingles for historical buildings and barns.  Grandma Sue added to her garden the cement bench with animal carvings. We got the cherub figurine to represent our little angel.  At night, her garden is well lit by three solar lights that we added – one is from her Godmother.

With all the things we added, her garden is still far from being finished. Many of the plants we planted are still too small.  Mom also want to upgrade the bird bath or even change it to a fountain. We also want to improve the feeder, make it more colorful and attract garden-friendly birds like hummingbirds and cardinals. With all the things we want to do, we’ll probably never going to stop working on her garden. But neither of us are complaining, since it’s a task we both enjoy.

Skyler’s garden has been a great therapy for us. Whenever we have that moment of sadness from missing her, we just look at her blooming garden and instantly feel joy.

I’m so sorry for what you and your husband are going through. My husband and i came across your blog one evening as i was writing my story on the march of dimes, share your story. Our daughter Marissa Alessandra Gomez was born with a heart defect, truncus arteriosis. She stayed in NICU from birth (May 11, 2012) to the day she passed. I carried her all the way to 39 weeks. Two weeks later, i learned that she tested positive for DeGeorge syndrome. We waited for surgery and were given lots of hope from doctors that she would go home very soon. On May 29th, i got a call and we rushed to the hospital. Marissa’s heart rate dropped and they were doing resuscitations. We asked the doctors to stop and they did 40 minutes later. I feel the same way you do. Seeing a baby section, pregnant women, babies..anything at stores always make me think about Marissa. We didn’t get to take her home but it still hurts. Staying busy, watering our plants, buying a puppy and staying out of the house is what we do to keep our minds busy. I still cry in the parking lot while leaving Target from seeing pregnant women or even running into a onesie or smelling her in my room. I miss my baby so much. I want to kiss her again. I want to hold her again. I never wanted her to suffer and know that she no longer does but it’s still difficult. We are getting counseling and believe me when i say this…you, your husband, grandparents, the whole family are in our prayers. Take care! You all are wonderful and amazing parents!

What a beautiful sacred space you have created. My prayer is that it will bring you peace as the flowers bloom, the birds sing, and you are “kissed” by the breeze and warmed by the sun. . .sending light and love your way.
